International Bilingual School (IBS) is a private educational institution of almost 300 students from kindergarten to High school. The school is made up of over forty employees, including 29 teachers and 16 administrative staff. Founded in 2009, IBS aims to provide high quality, bilingual education for children of Senegalese families as well as expatriates. The school is located at Liberté 6 Extension, a few minutes’ walk from the VDN highway. The school is authorized by the Senegal Ministry of National Education via ministerial decree No. 01401 / MEN / DEP / MS / ndsd of 31/01/2015.
The school offers the Senegalese national program, but reinforced by British and American English programs. Computer education is introduced from the early stage and children participate in physical education, as well as other basic subjects. The teaching staff are all trained, experienced and authorized to teach.
IBS has four classes of Nursery, six classes of primary and seven classes of secondary for the year 2017 - 2018. We present our students to the national examinations including the Primary School leaving certificate (CFEE), Common entrance to college, BFEM and BAC with a very encouraging success rate of between 90 – 95% over the last 5 years.
A rigorous and regular internal staff training program ensures that teachers are familiar with our academic approach. IBS had the rare opportunity to be sponsored by the British Council on a Connecting classrooms project that paired us with Newtown Primary School, Exeter in the UK from 2011 - 2014. This project assisted both schools to develop joint curriculum on education and global citizenship.
Our classes are maintained to a maximum of 25 students, except in exceptional circumstances, and early education classes have both a class teacher and an assistant. The school is organized into three sections: the Preschool, Primary and the College. All classrooms are well ventilated and above all, the school has two computer rooms, a fine arts studio and well-equipped playgrounds. Each of the three sections is led by a qualified and experienced teacher, combining knowledge of the national curriculum with years of teaching experience.
The heads of section, as well as the director of the school, make up the academic faculty that consults from time to time. IBS enjoys an excellent reputation in Dakar for providing high quality
education in a child-friendly environment. Being a bilingual school, we are committed to putting the child at the heart of everything we do and a place where education is exciting, the values of life are learned and everyone is respected for the person they are.
The school welcomes children from a wide variety of nationalities and cultures.
In our early childhood education section (Nursery/Primary), IBS runs the national curriculum, but with an innovative approach to the use of English and Computer education which is introduced from Nursery 1 and Primary 1 respectively. Children from any social, ethnic and academic backgrounds are assisted to work in both languages in accordance with the latest 21st century teaching methods to align with both the national and international curriculum. Textbooks and other latest instructional materials that enhance good teaching and learning are used. All these are used to give children the opportunity to acquire :
- Broad based knowledge of their immediate environments
- Global mindedness and perspectives to issues of the day
- Practical learning
- Ability to embrace and celebrate different cultures
- A sense of self identity an self esteem
In the Nursery & Primary section, IBS admits students from any ethnic, cultural and linguistic background as our methods are well tailored to helping children learn from a culture or language that is not theirs without losing their own individual identity. Our school is unique in the sense that it gives the child the ability of being able to speak and work in both French and English throughout his entire school period. We assist the English speakers acquire the French language skills and vice versa.
Admissions for a particular academic year begin from the month of June and due to our philosophy of not exceeding an average of 25 students per class, places are very competitive. Prospective students should therefore apply as early as possible.
